This is a genuine Victa pinion wheel drive gear, part number CH84477A, for Victa self-propelled mowers.

The pinion sits at the end of the drive axle and meshes with the gear inside the rear wheel, which is what makes the mower pull itself along. Over time the teeth wear down or strip, especially on mowers that get pushed hard up slopes or have been run with grass and grit packed around the wheels. When that happens you’ll usually hear a clicking or grinding from the back wheel, or the drive will slip and the mower stops pulling even though the drive lever is engaged.

Replacing the pinion is a straightforward job for most home mechanics. Pop the wheel off, swap the pinion over and refit. While you’ve got the wheel off, it’s worth checking the gear ring inside the wheel too, because a worn pinion and a worn wheel gear usually go together, and fitting a new pinion to a chewed-up wheel won’t last long.
